JIFF November 2019

The fifth annual Johannesburg Italian Film Festival (JIFF) returns to Rosebank Cinema Nouveau from 8-10 November.

Entry to JIFF is free, on a first-come first-served basis, and films are screened in Italian with English subtitles.

Friday 8 November, 2.30 pm
Io C’e (Just Believe) – Alessandro Aronadio

Massimo the owner of a dilapidated B&B, has an epiphany: in order to survive, he has to transform his B&B into a place of worship, and host tourists in exchange for a donation. After trying and failing to get into the restricted circles of Catholicism, Judaism and Islam in a series of hilarious meetings, Massimo decides to create his own religion.

Un Viaggio Facile Facile (Easy) – Andrea Magnani

When an Italian go-kart driver gains too much weight to fit into his racer, he’s forced to retire. His brother offers him a new job delivering the corpse of a Ukrainian man back to his homeland.

 

Saturday 9 November, 2.30pm
Contromano (Against the Flow) – Antonio Albanese
Mario Cavallaro is a 50-year-old Milanese man, who runs a successful sock shop, which he inherited from his father. But his daily routine is turned upside down when Oba, a young Senegalese street vendor, starts selling socks outside his shop. Not knowing what else to do, Mario kidnaps Oba and embarks on a long car journey to take him back to his country.

 

Saturday 9 November, 5.30pm
Smetto quando voglio (I Can Quit Whenever I Want) – Sydney Sibilia
Pietro Zinni, a brilliant neurobiologist, loses his university job during the financial crisis. Not knowing what else to do, he assembles a team of ex-researchers like himself – a chemist, a cultural anthropologist, an economist, an archaeologist, and two Latin scholars – to produce a little-known smart drug that is not yet illegal under Italian law. The gang achieves immediate and unexpected success, but are unprepared for the problematic lifestyle that comes with such sudden wealth.

Sunday 10 November, 2.30pm
Come un gatto in tangenzaile (Like a cat on a highway) – Riccardo Milani
Giovanni and Monica are the most diverse people on the face of the earth. He is an intellectual and a prophet of social integration living in the centre of Rome, while she is a former cashier of a supermarket, dealing with the problematic multicultural environment of her suburban neighborhood. They would never have met if their children had not fallen in love, but the two now have a common goal: their children’s relationship must end!

A casa tutti bene (There’s no place like home) – Gabriele Muccino
A big family reunites to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of grandma Alba and grandpa Pietro in a large island villa. Bad weather leads to their being stranded on the island – and the idyllic holiday relations don’t take long to go awry.
